Panel discussions are a great way to tackle the most poignant issues, allowing for a range of voices to give a broad church of perspectives, producing an unforgettable session. Typically presented without visual content such as slides or handouts, a panel discussion operates more as a live discussion between experts on pre-selected questions and topics.
A typical panel discussion can last anywhere from thirty to sixty minutes for the discussion itself. A good general rule of thumb is to allow around ten minutes per panellist, giving everyone plenty of opportunity to speak. Three to six panellists is an effective amount - any less, and it is difficult to label it a panel rather than a conversation; any more and it can become unwieldy with too many voices.
With a number of voices on stage, we will also need a presenter or host to keep the conversation moving and curate the discussion journey. Beginning with a short intro to each of the speakers, the host moves on to an opening question or topic from a list of pre-selected content. The skill lies in moving through these topics whilst allowing for some deviation, always being sure to bring the conversation back to point and including all speakers.
A great way to finish a panel discussion is with a short Q&A session from the audience. This can further enrich the conversation based on points that have arisen throughout, as well as giving the audience the chance to feel engaged and heard.
