Have you got an event coming up and need some direction in the planning stages? Before you do anything, it’s important to come up with a purpose for your conference. Keep reading to hear some tips on how to find a purpose for your event.
Think about needs and opportunities you can respond to. These will determine your goal and in turn, generate your ideas.
For example, a need could be ‘we need to cultivate community and growth in our church’. So, your purpose is social – to cultivate community. Another need/opportunity could be: ‘raising awareness of our charity’ (a practical goal) or ‘inspiring creative worship in the church’ (a spiritual goal).
Knowing what need/opportunity you’re responding to is vital because it helps focus what you do and gives your event clear direction. It helps you evaluate your success before, during and after your conference.
Clarifying the needs you’re meeting also helps you promote your event to others because they can see why it's happening and what they might get from it.
Write down your event’s purpose. This could be social, spiritual, educational, inspirational, practical or something else. All worthy goals! However, remembering the need or opportunity you want to focus on will help determine the right purpose for your event. After setting your goal, it’s time to know your audience.
